For Doctors ONly

Thank you for your interest in Oral Health for Diabetics. If you are a health professional you already know the importance of helping your patients avoid the diabetic complications associated with this disease condition.

While it has been known for some time that periodontal disease and diabetes have a connection, recent research has confirmed that chronic infections in the mouth such as “gum disease” increases systemic inflammation and the risk for cardiovascular disease. Additionally it has been shown that the presence of periodontal disease can complicate the control of blood glucose, and that the presence of diabetes (especially if not well controlled) can cause and/or make worse periodontal disease.

Because of these multiple cross-connections and disease affiliations, it is now considered vital that people with diabetes have stepped-up management of their oral health. Physicians should routinely insist that their diabetic patients have tightly regulated oral health care, and that they should actively refer their patients for competent dental and hygiene professional care.

Additionally, dentists caring for diabetic patients should actively work with their patient’s physicians to assure that multi-disciplinary management of diabetes is thorough and always up to date.

Because of these high medical/dental management needs which diabetes imposes, there are multiple opportunities for dentists and physicians to be cross-referring their patients as they work together to help their mutual patients manage their condition and avoid the many complications of diabetes, including the oral complications.

Dentists who see the value of working closely with people in their practices and communities who have diabetes, and who would like to work more closely with medical doctors who treat diabetic patients may find value in becoming an “Oral Health for Diabetics” dentist. Aside from the extra focus and expertise that this implies, it provides a unique opportunity to identify with the “diabetic community” in your area.
